After the Polo Match

Blocking it in.

I took the reference photos for this painting maybe 5-6 years ago. At the time I took a couple hundred photos mostly of what happens off the polo field. So eventually I will be doing more paintings of some of the scenes that I liked. This one captured one of the stablemen taking several of the horses back to the stables to be showered off. I loved the cloud of dust they created as they walked along.

Sometimes I feel incomplete being limited to the small size. My larger studio in the states will accommodate the larger paintings much better so the big ones will have to wait for now.

Gypsy Horse Journal Feature

Once again this one shows how much I am drawn to the dramatic light and the close-up and different poses. I think I do the close-ups because I really would love to be eating that closely with them. I want to be touching them so I guess that I want others to as well. It helps me to have a more complete experience of them.

This one is not a close-up but I was really struck by the way the sunlight seemed to pervade all parts of the scene - even into the shadows, thus the lack of stark contrasts. I just don't see how gypsy horses and highland cattle can see with all of that hair in their faces.

I have joined an on-line group on Facebook called Equine Artists. There are some pretty amazing artists there - some mediocre ones too I must say. I am always pushing to be above the mediocre ones. Sometimes I am better and sometimes I wonder. Such is the psychological life of an artist - at least me as an artist.

"A Stroll Through Englischer Garten"

Late last winter Bob and I were in Munich. What a city! Easy to walk. Easy to understand the layout. One misty morning we woke up and took a walk through the Englischer Garten, which they say is bigger than Central Park. These riders were way off in the distance but were so compelling to watch. I have been wanting to do a foggy scene for a while and this one had a story that had mystery to it that drew me in. (Aside: There were also surfers in the river/stream that goes through this park - SURFERS!! I think it was a wave machine in one area that created enough for them to play on. )
